Rupee weakens against dollar as crude oil prices rise
Crude oil crossing 100 dollars a barrel has pushed the rupee to a one-month low against the dollar.
Crude oil prices in global markets have crossed 100 dollars a barrel again, putting pressure on the Indian rupee. Rising tension in the Middle East, concerns over oil supply, and markets awaiting the US Federal Reserve's decision on interest rates have together increased turmoil in the currency market. On Tuesday, the rupee fell to 95.92 against the dollar. For India, which imports oil, this fall is seen as significant from the point of view of inflation.
The conflict in the Middle East has raised fears that the supply of crude oil will be affected. After an attack on Saudi Arabia's energy infrastructure, the price of Brent crude reached around 107.7 dollars per barrel. Oil prices have risen by about 20 percent this month. India depends on large-scale imports of crude oil for its needs, so a rise in prices in the international market directly affects the country's import bill.
Along with rising oil prices, the US dollar is also strengthening. The yield on US 10-year treasury bonds rising above 5 percent has increased investors' preference for the dollar. At the same time, the likelihood of the US Federal Reserve raising interest rates has also strengthened in the market.
This could put pressure on money moving out of major emerging markets. This is directly affecting the value of the rupee, and on Tuesday the rupee fell to its lowest level in more than a month.
Signals from the market suggest that the Reserve Bank of India is intervening to stop the fall in the rupee. The sale of dollars through government banks has slowed the rupee's fall to some extent. But if oil prices remain above 100 dollars for a long time, pressure on India's import bill and inflation could increase further. Going forward, three factors, the RBI's stance, oil prices, and the US Fed's decision, will be crucial in determining the direction of the rupee.
