90 percent of microbes benefit human life, says Dr Prakash Halami
A microbiology expert warned of rising antibiotic resistance at an awareness event for students in Arjuni Morgaon.
About 90 percent of the small and large microorganisms around us are useful for human life, and only 10 percent cause disease. This was said by Dr Prakash Halami, a member of the Central Food Technological Research Institute in Mysuru. He said antibiotics are being misused in different sectors across India, which is increasing the resistance of microorganisms to antibiotics. He warned that in the coming days, no antibiotic may be able to work against these microorganisms.
Dr Halami made these remarks during "Microbe Art", a set of competitions organised for students by the Department of Microbiology of the local Shivprasad Sadanand Jaiswal College in Arjuni Morgaon, together with the Microbiology Society of India, to spread information and awareness about microorganisms.
The programme was presided over by the college's officiating principal, Dr Bharat Rathod. Mayank Jaiswal, joint secretary of Shri Durga Shikshan Sanstha, was the chief guest, along with IQAC coordinator Dr Lakshmikant Kapgate and programme coordinator Dr Amol Shyamkuwar.
In his presidential address, Dr Bharat Rathod said the subject of microbiology is extremely important for understanding the microorganisms present in life. He also praised the teams and professors who came from various science junior colleges in the Arjuni Morgaon area.
Several well-known people attended the programme, including Prof Onkar Lanjewar, Prof Feroz Shende and Prof Jyotsna Shelke from Saraswati Junior College, Arjuni/Mor; Bhimrao Lade from Smt Umabai Sangramre Junior College, Navegaon Bandh; Prof Praful Golelwar from Jai Durga Junior College, Gaurnagar; and Prof Shital Meshram from New Moon Junior College, Arjuni Morgaon. Students from these various junior colleges took part enthusiastically in the different competitions.
The programme was compered by Utkarsha Kamble and Rutuja Khobragade, while Dr Amol Shyamkuwar gave the introductory remarks and vote of thanks. Prof Bhagyashree Lanjewar, Prof Vivek Kathane, Prof Yatrik Bhagat, Prof Mohan Dhurtkar and Prof Kailas Lokhande worked to make the programme a success.
