Technical snag shuts Thane's Kasarvadavali flyover, MMRDA diverts traffic

The Kasarvadavali flyover on Thane's busiest Ghodbunder Road has been shut completely for an indefinite technical inspection. The decision was taken by the MMRDA, and coming just ahead of Ganeshotsav, it could cause heavy traffic jams for motorists.

The flyover was built as part of a metro project to ease congestion at the Kasarvadavali junction. But within a year of construction, technical defects and damage surfaced at the bridge's joints and one of its pillars. After a complaint about the bridge's structure on Saturday night, the contractor first carried out preliminary repairs. Following this, an MMRDA team inspected the bridge on Sunday, raising serious concerns over the safety of commuters. After the defects were found, there is public anger over the administration and contractor's work, and questions have been raised over the quality of the bridge.

As per orders from Thane traffic division Deputy Commissioner of Police Pankaj Shirsat, all movement on the bridge has been stopped from midnight of September 15, 2026. The inspection and its report are expected to take at least a week, until which traffic has been diverted to slip roads and alternative routes.

Entry has been closed from the start of the Kasarvadavali flyover for all vehicles headed from Thane towards Ghodbunder Gujarat Road.

For heavy vehicles, the alternative route is that heavy and large vehicles going from Thane towards Ghodbunder Gujarat Road will take the slip road next to the Kasarvadavali flyover to reach their destination.

Two routes have been given for light vehicles. First, small vehicles such as cars, auto rickshaws, motorcycles, police vehicles, fire brigade, ambulances, vehicles carrying Ganesh idols for immersion and other essential service vehicles going from Thane towards Ghodbunder Gujarat Road will go via Vijay Garden D-Mart, past the Kasarvadavali police station, turn right towards Grand Square Chowk and Vihang Valley Chowk, turn left at Titan Hospital and reach their destination via the Thane-Ghodbunder main road.

The second route is that small vehicles going from Thane towards Ghodbunder Road will turn left at Anand Nagar signal, go via Grand Square Chowk and Vihang Valley Chowk, turn left at Titan Hospital and reach their destination via the Thane-Ghodbunder main road.
