Mumbai Metro Line 9 phase 2 nears launch, trial runs on connecting stations
Signalling and train trials are underway to link three new Metro Line 9 phase 2 stations to the existing network.
The Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL) is working rapidly on metro projects to make commuting easier for Mumbaikars. As part of this, an important step has been taken towards bringing phase 2 of Metro Line 9 into actual operation. Signalling and train trials are being carried out to connect the three additional stations of this new phase with the already running Metro Line 2A, Line 7 and phase 1 of Metro Line 9.
The technical team needs continuous time to successfully test the new phase's signalling system with the existing metro network. It is not possible to carry out such complex technical trials while regular passenger service is running. Therefore, to complete this work while following safety and operational standards, a special block is being taken every morning from 15 to 25 September 2026.
Because of this temporary change, regular passenger service on Metro Line 2A, Line 7 and Metro Line 9 (phase 1) will start at 6.30 am during this period. To avoid wasting passengers' time, this block has been limited only to the period before passenger service begins. MMMOCL also stated on its official Twitter handle that due to the special block, the first metro will start at 6.30 am for 10 days, and passenger service on Metro Line 2A, Line 7 and phase 1 of Metro Line 9 will start at 6.30 am between 15 and 25 September 2026, as three more stations of phase 2 of Metro Line 9 are being connected to the operational metro network.
The software required for speed and signalling trials of phase 2 of Metro Line 9 is now available. Controlled migration and certification of this signalling software is being carried out through the Operations Control Centre (OCC) at Charkop depot. This technical process will eventually give passengers a fully safe, uninterrupted and modern metro travel experience.
MMMOCL's administration has appealed to all passengers to keep the changed timetable, that is, the 6.30 am start of service, in mind while travelling by metro in the mornings during these 10 days from 15 to 25 September 2026, and to plan their daily commute accordingly. Passengers have been urged to cooperate with the administration to strengthen the Mumbai Metro network further and to safely open phase 2 of Metro Line 9 for the public.
