Citizens seek review of HC order lifting reservation on North Nagpur park land
Ten residents have asked the Bombay High Court for permission to file a third-party review plea against its order ending the park reservation on 37.38 acres in North Nagpur.
A legal battle has resumed over a large plot of land earmarked for a park and garden in North Nagpur. The dispute concerns the reservation on about 37.38 acres of land, which 10 residents of the area have now taken to court.
On 10 December 2025, the High Court had passed an order treating the reservation on this land as having lapsed. Sharad Tukaram Meshram and nine other residents have now sought the court's permission to file a third-party review application against that order.
The residents say this is not merely a dispute over private land. According to them, it is directly linked to the people of North Nagpur, the environment of the area and the city's future planning, and should therefore be treated as a serious public issue.
The applicants say that the moment the reservation was lifted on land that had been set aside for a park and garden under the city's development plan, the green space intended for thousands of people was put at risk.
A case titled Sureshchandra Suri and others versus State of Maharashtra and others has been pending in the High Court. The new applicants say they were not parties to this original petition, and so had no opportunity to present their case before the order was passed on 10 December 2025.
The residents say they are directly affected by the order and have sought the court's permission to file a review petition. According to them, the disputed land is in Mouza Nari and includes survey numbers 202, 203/1, 164, 165, 211-1, 168, 169, 170, 171/1, 172/1 and 175/1.
The application states that a total of about 37.38 acres of land in North Nagpur was reserved for a park and garden under the city's development plan. Residents of the area had long hoped that a public park would come up on this large plot, giving North Nagpur a major green space.
The applicants have told the court that ending the park and garden reservation on this land could directly affect the interests of local residents and the area's environmental needs.
