Tata Group agrees to workers' demands, Godrej ordered to act: Sunil Tatkare
MP Sunil Tatkare says Tata Group has agreed to local workers' demands but Godrej administration remains uncooperative
Following an ongoing agitation over the demands of local workers, a major development has emerged. At a high-level meeting mediated by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the Tata Group has taken a positive stance on the workers' demands. But on the other hand, the Godrej administration's attitude remains obstinate, alleged Member of Parliament Sunil Tatkare.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Tatkare shared details of the discussion held with the Tata Group. He said the company has agreed to take onto its rolls local workers who have been working on contract for more than three years. This is likely to bring major relief to many local workers.
It was also decided to give priority to local contractors for labour supply and other small and large works. The process of obtaining vendor codes will be made easier through the labour commissioner, the administration and local elected representatives.
Also, manpower among the outside contractors currently working will be gradually reduced until their contracts expire, giving opportunities to local people. It has been planned that once the contract period ends, the related work will be given entirely to local contractors.
While the Tata Group has taken a conciliatory stance, the Godrej administration has not cooperated, Tatkare alleged. He said that as per Supreme Court directions, gurcharan or gairan land cannot be given for private use. But serious complaints have come to light regarding such land within the Godrej premises.
There are also complaints of tribal families' lands and farmers' unacquired land being included within the company's premises without paying compensation, Tatkare said. Allegations have also been made of illegal encroachment on land and roads owned by MIDC.
Taking the matter seriously, a written letter has been given to the district collector directing immediate legal action, Tatkare said. He also made clear that he would speak directly with the Chief Minister at night to brief him on the full situation.
