Pune is now becoming a city of engineers, not just education

There was a time when the name Pune brought to mind education, literature, art and culture, and universities. Then, as the IT industry expanded, Pune came to be known as an "IT hub". Now, engineering colleges, research institutes, the vehicle industry, tech companies, industrial belts, startups and new technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics and electric vehicles are adding another layer to Pune's identity. This journey from an education hub to a technology hub is now making Pune a "city of engineers".

Maharashtra's 2025-26 engineering admission process included 380 engineering institutions across the state. Engineering education in Pune has also moved beyond traditional branches to new technology-based courses. Students are getting opportunities across branches such as computer science, IT, artificial intelligence, electronics, mechanical and civil engineering, which is drawing students from across the country to Pune for engineering studies.

But Pune's identity as an "engineers' city" has not been built by colleges alone. The vehicle manufacturing industry and its supply chain in the Pimpri-Chinchwad area form an important part of Pune's technical economy. Institutions working on vehicle research, testing and certification, along with industries linked to the automobile sector, are creating major opportunities for engineers in mechanical, electronics and automobile engineering, and now electric vehicle technology.

On the other hand, the IT sector spread across areas such as Hinjewadi, Kharadi and Magarpatta has completely changed the nature of engineers' work. Along with IT, Pune's tech workforce is also working in fields such as artificial intelligence, data analysis, robotics, the Internet of Things and cybersecurity. Engineering and product development centres of global companies are growing in Pune, further strengthening the city's technical ecosystem.

According to a 2026 industry report, Pune has more than 500 Global Capability Centres, and more than 130 centres have either opened or expanded since 2024. About 40 percent of these centres are working on artificial intelligence-related work. Pune's journey is thus moving towards being an "education hub - industrial city - IT hub - new technology centre", and at the centre of this change is the engineer who carries knowledge, skill and technology forward together.

Senior architect Sanjay Bhurewal from Pune says, "Pune's identity today is no longer limited to just an education hub or IT centre. A strong ecosystem of the vehicle industry, IT, research and new technology has been built here. In this context, engineers in Pune do not just face job opportunities but the challenge of understanding the needs of the city and society to build smart, safe and useful technology-based solutions. Pune is moving from being a city that uses technology to a city that builds technology."

Software developer Seema Shirwal, who works in Pune, says, "Artificial intelligence and the IT sector are expanding rapidly in Pune, but it is important to have humans at the centre of technology. AI may change the way software is built, but engineers working in a tech hub like Pune need to understand the real problems of the city and society, ask the right questions and take responsibility for the outcomes of the technology they build. So the coming generation of engineers needs social awareness along with technical skills."
