Youth climbs mobile tower in Nagpur, rescued after two and a half hours
A 20-year-old man who climbed a mobile tower in Nagpur's Civil Lines area was brought down after a long rescue effort, then fled the police station at night
A strange incident unfolded in Nagpur's Civil Lines area on Tuesday. A 20-year-old man suddenly climbed a mobile tower at Vidhayak Nivas on Law College Road, Ahinsa Chowk, and flatly refused to come down. The act caused panic among people in the area.
As soon as the fire department was informed, a team rushed to the spot with equipment. But bringing the young man down was not easy. The rescue operation went on for more than two and a half hours. After considerable effort, he was finally brought down safely and handed over to Ambazari police.
According to the fire department, they received information around 11:45 am that a young man had climbed the tower at Ahinsa Chowk. On getting the information, officers and staff from the Civil Fire Station left for the spot with a team.
On reaching the spot, the team found that the young man had climbed quite high up the tower. Given the seriousness of the situation, the rescue was started using a turntable ladder (TTL). A team comprising Deputy Fire Officers Manke and Rajurkar of Nagpur district, driver-operator Nayan Pethe, fire staff and a police official tried to reach the young man, but he was not willing to come down.
Whenever the firefighters tried to get close to him, he climbed further up. Wiring on the tower and other technical problems also made it difficult to bring the TTL cage right up to him.
After several attempts, the fire officers and staff moved towards the tower once again. This time, an officer and a staff member reached the tower using the TTL cage, while another staff member climbed up using the tower's ladder. The three together caught hold of the young man and brought him down safely in the TTL cage.
According to the fire department, the young man is Kishore Sinha, a resident of Bortara village in Balod district, Chhattisgarh, who was quite distressed. He had been living in Nagpur along with some companions for work. He was handed over to the police, but around 8 pm the same night, he managed to escape from Ambazari police station.
