Speeding SUV hits seven in Nagpur, woman driver held on suspicion of drink-driving

A major accident occurred in the Gorewada area of Nagpur city around 10:30 pm on Tuesday. Near Dinshaw Factory, a speeding Kia Seltos car suddenly went out of control and hit people standing on the roadside as well as those walking.

Seven people in all, including three young children, were injured in the crash. The car's speed was so high that chaos and shouting broke out at the spot right after the impact.

According to police, the Kia Seltos car bearing registration MH-31 FU-0272 was being driven by a 32-year-old woman named Deepali Yang. The car was moving at very high speed. It first hit the rear of an SUV belonging to Babul Kulmethe, which was parked on the roadside, with great force. At the time, he was getting out of his vehicle along with his young daughter, Vanshika.

After this forceful collision, the woman completely lost control of the car. The out-of-control car then directly hit three young children who were walking on the road. Immediately after, it also hit two other people, Harish Revatkar and Ashish Nakhate, who were on the road.

As soon as the accident happened, local residents and people on the road rushed to help, and all the injured were taken to a nearby hospital. Those injured include Harish Revatkar, Ashish Purushottam Nakhate, Balu Kulmethe and the child Vanshika Kulmethe. Four of them, including three children, were seriously injured, and the condition of some is stated to be worrying.

A large crowd gathered at the spot after the accident. Angry local residents caught the woman driver on the spot and handed her over to Gittikhadan police station. The angry residents then laid siege to Gittikhadan police station, demanding immediate and strict legal action against the woman driver for endangering the lives of innocent people and children.

As the situation turned tense, additional police personnel were deployed around Gittikhadan police station. Given the seriousness of the matter, senior police officers, including Zone 2 DCPs Annapurna Singh and DCP Reddy, reached the spot and calmed the angry residents.

Eyewitnesses present at the scene suspected that the woman driver was driving under the influence of alcohol. Deputy Commissioner of Police Annapurna Singh said the 32-year-old woman driver has been detained by police and has undergone a medical examination.

According to police, official confirmation of alcohol consumption can only come after the medical and blood test reports arrive. Police are currently examining CCTV footage from the accident spot and surrounding areas to establish the exact sequence of the accident. Gittikhadan police are taking further legal action in this case of rash and extremely high-speed driving.
