Nagpur declared official tourism district
Maharashtra's tourism department has declared Nagpur a tourism district, aiming to boost its historical, religious and wildlife tourism sites.
Nagpur, known variously as the Orange City, the second capital of Maharashtra and the Tiger Capital of India, has received official government approval for its tourism development. The Maharashtra government's tourism department has declared Nagpur district a "tourism district". The decision is expected to give a major boost to the development of the district's historical sites, religious and cultural heritage, natural resources and wildlife tourism.
Under Maharashtra's Tourism Policy-2016, Nagpur had already been declared a "special tourism district". That decision was taken keeping in mind the district's economic and non-economic importance. But given Nagpur's growing tourism potential, geographical position and rich historical heritage, a proposal for a separate tourism district status was sent to the government. The government order on this has now been issued.
The main objective behind the decision is the comprehensive development of Nagpur's tourism potential, increasing the number of tourists and creating new employment opportunities for local people. The order issued by tourism department deputy secretary Santosh Rokade places special emphasis on promoting local economic development. With the expansion of the tourism sector, the hotel business, transport services, local food and beverages, tourist guides, handicrafts, folk arts and other related businesses are also expected to benefit significantly.
A major feature of Nagpur's tourism is its historical heritage. Nagpur was an important seat of power during the era of the Gond kings and the Bhosale dynasty. This is why several historical buildings, forts and old sites in the district still bear witness to this glorious history today. Along with its history, the international recognition Nagpur has gained as the Orange City and the district's natural beauty also hold special significance for tourism.
Nagpur also holds a distinct place when it comes to wildlife tourism. Known as the Tiger Capital of India, Nagpur is surrounded by important forest areas such as Pench National Park and Umred-Karhandla. Nagpur is considered an important entry point for wildlife enthusiasts coming from different parts of the country and abroad. With tourism district status, the administration will get new impetus to develop this area with more planning.
The district's religious and cultural identity is equally rich. The old Ram temple at Ramtek, the water sports facilities in the Khindsi area, and sites such as Deekshabhoomi particularly attract tourists. Besides this, the district's beautiful parks, folk arts, handicrafts and the rich tradition of tribal folk dances also offer great potential for cultural tourism. In the times ahead, this creates a major opportunity for the combined development of historical, religious, natural, cultural and wildlife tourism in Nagpur district.
