Nagpur RTO collects over Rs 555 crore in tax in three and a half years
An RTI query has revealed that the Nagpur RTO collected over Rs 555 crore in road, green and import taxes between January 2023 and July 2026.
The Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Nagpur has collected more than Rs 5,55,80,56,409 in taxes over the past three and a half years, according to information obtained under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005.
RTI activist Abhay Kolarkar had sought the details from the Nagpur RTO, and the department released the figures in response.
The data covers the period from January 1, 2023 to July 31, 2026. Road tax alone accounted for Rs 25,34,51,72,254 during this period. The green tax, levied on vehicles more than 15 years old, brought in Rs 214,07,18,924. The one-time road tax on imported cars contributed Rs 7,21,65,231.
According to RTO records, registration and re-registration of both new and old vehicles in the city generated a large share of the road tax collected.
Buyers of imported and luxury vehicles also added significantly to the collection. During the period, one-time road tax on imported cars and other vehicles brought in a record Rs 27,21,65,231.
The RTO did not provide separate figures for green tax or road tax collected specifically from vehicles more than 20 years old that have been declared unfit. The department said such vehicles are not stored separately in the Vahan 4.0 central computer system, making it impossible to extract a separate figure for them.
The green tax is levied on the re-registration of vehicles older than 15 years and is aimed at protecting the environment and curbing pollution.
