Gold worth Rs 1.95 lakh stolen from Nagbhid house after thief locates hidden key

A house in Mausi village, under Nagbhid police station limits in Chandrapur district, was burgled in broad daylight after an unidentified thief broke the lock on the main door and stole gold jewellery worth about Rs 1.95 lakh kept inside an almirah. The family had gone out of town to meet their daughter, and the thief took advantage of their absence.

Shobha Bhimrao Bankar (55), a resident of Mausi, had gone with her husband Bhimrao on September 10, 2026, around 3 pm to visit their elder daughter in Brahmapuri. Before leaving, she had locked the bedroom almirah and kept its key in a box near the household shrine, and had also properly locked the main door. When Shobha Bankar returned home with her younger daughter Vijaya on the morning of September 12 at around 10 am, she found the lock on the main door already broken.

On opening the door, they found the household belongings scattered and thrown around. On checking the bedroom, they discovered that the thief had taken the key from the box near the shrine, opened the almirah, and left the key hanging in the lock. The thief did not touch the silver jewellery kept in the almirah, but took two gold chains of one tola each worth Rs 1,02,000, two pairs of earrings of half a tola each worth Rs 52,000, a 3-gram gold nose ring worth Rs 15,000 and a half-tola gold ring worth Rs 26,000. In all, gold worth Rs 1.95 lakh was stolen.

Shobha Bankar immediately went to Nagbhid police station and filed a complaint. Based on her complaint, Nagbhid police have registered a case against the unidentified thief under sections 331(3) and 331(4) (house-breaking by night or day) and section 305 (theft in a dwelling house) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Assistant Police Inspector Dilip Gopichand Potbhare is investigating the case under the guidance of station in-charge Ramakant Kokate.
