Kerala: Twin infants die after apparent chemical exposure at home

One-year-old twin brothers died while playing at home in Kerala's Idukki district. The incident took place in the Vazharakkara area of Adimali on Friday night. Initial investigation suggests the children's health may have deteriorated after they tasted a chemical that had spilt on the kitchen floor, though the exact cause of death has not yet been confirmed.

The family, which had two young children, lived in the Vazharakkara area. On Friday night, the adults in the house were occupied with their own work while the two children played inside. As the children were not crying, the family did not pay close attention to them. During this time, a bottle of chemical kept in the kitchen fell to the floor and its contents spilt out. According to initial assessment, the two children, who were playing nearby, tasted this liquid.

Shortly after tasting the liquid, both children's condition deteriorated severely. As soon as the family realised this, they rushed the children to a nearby hospital. However, doctors examined them and declared both dead. The family has been devastated by the sudden tragedy, and people in the surrounding area are also shocked by the news.

On receiving information about the incident, Adimali police reached the spot and began an investigation. During the probe, police found a bottle of paint thinner and a bottle of pesticide in the kitchen. It has not yet been determined exactly what caused the deaths of the two children. Police have sent both bodies for post-mortem examination. Only after the post-mortem and medical reports are received will it become clear whether tasting the chemical was indeed the cause of death. Adimali police have registered a case and begun further investigation.
