Theft at Gondia Zilla Parishad: executive engineer's room ransacked, computer missing, all CCTVs found off

A serious security lapse has come to light at the administrative building of Gondia Zilla Parishad. The incident surfaced on September 15, when thieves broke the door of the executive engineer of the Public Works Department's room and ransacked it after entering. According to a report by Khemendra Katre, the thieves stole a computer from the room and also broke the ceiling fans. In addition, papers containing obscene abuse directed at the executive engineer were found stuck on the walls of the room.

The office had been closed due to a continuous string of holidays since September 11. The matter came to light today when regular work resumed. An FIR has been registered against unidentified accused at the Gondia Rural police station over the incident. The incident has raised serious questions about the safety and security of officials.

The most shocking aspect was that the CCTV cameras installed in the Zilla Parishad building at a cost of lakhs of rupees were found completely switched off. Suspicion is being raised over whether it is mere coincidence that not a single camera was working in such a large government building and such a sensitive department, or whether there is a larger conspiracy behind it. All the cameras being switched off at once also raises serious questions about the administration's functioning.

The manner in which the executive engineer's room was specifically targeted, with the glass of the door broken and the computer stolen, has deepened suspicion that this may not be an ordinary theft but an attempt to destroy important government documents or evidence, or an attempt to intimidate the officer concerned. Within Zilla Parishad circles, there has also been talk since the incident of a threat to the lives of senior officials.

A headquarters such as the Zilla Parishad should have had round-the-clock security, but despite this, the thieves entered without fear. They broke the glass of the door of the executive engineer's room, stole the computer containing government information, and damaged government property by breaking the office fans.

Following the incident, police have registered a case and begun an investigation. However, there are demands for an impartial probe into how the CCTV cameras suddenly went off, who is behind it, and what the motive was behind the theft of important data from a government office, so that the accused can be caught soon.
