Ganeshotsav: 7 roads shut 24 hours in Lalbaug-Parel-Kalachowki, no-parking on several streets

Mumbai's Lalbaug, Parel and Kalachowki areas are expected to see huge crowds of Ganesh devotees during Ganeshotsav. To avoid traffic jams and prevent any accidents, major changes have been made to the traffic arrangements in these areas. Vehicle movement will be restricted on some roads in the area between September 14 and 25, and seven key routes will be temporarily closed round the clock.

During Ganeshotsav, large crowds of devotees throng different Ganesh mandals across Mumbai for darshan. Lalbaug, Parel and Kalachowki, being the biggest hubs of this crowd, see a sharp rise in traffic as well. The crowds bring not just jams but also concerns for the safety of pedestrians, and it is with this in mind that the administration has put these traffic changes in place as a precaution.

Under the traffic management plan, the stretch on Dr B A Road from Comrade Krishna Desai Chowk (Bharat Mata Junction) to Hansraj Rathod Chowk (Bawla Compound Junction) will be closed. Movement will also be closed on Mahadev Palav Marg (Currey Road) from Shingte Master Chowk to Comrade Krishna Desai Chowk (Bharat Mata Junction). The right turn from Sane Guruji Marg towards Dr B A Road at Sant Jagnade Maharaj Chowk (Gas Company) has been closed.

Besides this, the road on Dattaram Lad Marg from Udupi Hotel to Shantaram Pujari Chowk will be closed. Ganeshnagar Lane (Chivda Galli) will also be closed from the Dr B A Road junction to the Pooja Hotel junction at Madhav Prabhu Chowk. The road on Dinshaw Petit Lane from the Dr B A Road junction to the Ganeshnagar Lane junction will be closed. Vehicle entry will also be closed on Dr S S Rao Road from Sadashiv Gopal Naik Chowk to the Lalbaug police chowky.

The railway administration said Ganeshotsav sees larger than usual crowds at railway stations and the surrounding areas. This raises the risk of accidents on unsafe foot overbridges as pedestrian crowds increase there. To avoid any mishap, it has been said that the use of some of these bridges needs to be stopped.

The administration has appealed to people to follow its directions to keep traffic and pedestrian movement smooth during the crowds, and to use the alternative routes available instead of the closed roads.

To keep traffic moving smoothly, no-parking has also been imposed on several roads in the area. These include Dr B A Road, Sane Guruji Marg, Dattaram Lad Marg, Ganeshnagar Lane, Dinshaw Petit Lane, Barrister Nath Pai Marg, G D Ambekar Marg, Dr S S Rao Marg, Anant Malvankar Marg, Shri Saibaba Marg, T B Kadam Marg, Dattaram Khamkar Marg, Tanaji Malusare Marg, Jijibhoy Marg and Mahadev Palav Marg.

The administration has made clear that between September 14 and 25, Mumbaikars passing through the Lalbaug, Parel and Kalachowki areas should check the traffic changes before leaving home, and use alternative routes as far as possible.
