People who use FASTag have some relief coming their way. They will no longer need to remove the old FASTag on their vehicle and fit a new one if they want to switch the bank linked to it. Union minister Nitin Gadkari has launched a new facility called OneTag, which can be used through the Rajmarg Yatra app.
The central government has offered this facility to vehicle owners who use FASTag. Until now, anyone wanting to change the bank linked to their FASTag had to first deactivate the old FASTag and then go through the entire process with the new bank to get a fresh one. Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari launched this new facility at the Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2026. It will let vehicle owners keep their existing NETC FASTag while changing the bank linked to it.
The OneTag facility has been developed jointly by the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). Its main aim is to make it easier for FASTag users to switch banks.
Until now, switching banks involved time, paperwork and additional expense. With OneTag, this process will become considerably simpler.
The facility is currently being offered through the NHAI's Rajmarg Yatra mobile app. The entire FASTag portability process can be completed through this app. First, the customer's eligibility will be checked, followed by secure verification. Once the customer gives consent, they can choose the new bank of their preference. The new bank will then complete the customer's onboarding.
The key feature of this facility is that the FASTag's tag ID and the vehicle's registration number will remain unchanged. This means there is no need to remove the FASTag already fitted on the vehicle or stick on a new one, doing away with the hassle of ordering a new tag, receiving delivery and having it fitted.
In the FASTag portability process, the responsibilities of both the old and new banks have been defined. The old bank will be responsible for wallet-related matters, verification, balances remaining in the wallet, refunds and pending transactions. The new bank will handle the customer's onboarding and provide the necessary FASTag services once the portability process is complete.
This change will give vehicle owners greater freedom in choosing a bank for their FASTag. Not having to get a new FASTag when switching banks will save both time and money, and is also expected to cut costs related to printing, delivery and reissuing of FASTags. Overall, the OneTag facility is being seen as an important step toward making FASTag portability easier, faster and more convenient. Millions of vehicle owners across the country are expected to benefit from being able to switch banks while keeping their existing FASTag.
