Dahisar-Bhayander Link Road: work speeds up on coastal road project's final stretch

The final stretch of Mumbai's ambitious Coastal Road (North) project has picked up pace. This stretch connects to the Dahisar-Bhayander Link Road (DBLR), where piling and pile-cap work for the bridge foundation has begun. The municipal corporation has set a target of completing the entire project by December 2028, and as part of this, essential work on the launching girder will begin in the second week of October.

The entire mega project, including interchanges and connecting roads, spans about 60 kilometres and will connect the Versova and Bhayander areas to the coastal road. The project's work has been divided into seven sections, named A, B, C, D, E, F and the Dahisar-Bhayander Link Road (DBLR). The Dahisar-Bhayander Link Road is a key project for Mumbai and the Mira-Bhayander area and is currently at the stage of actual construction on the ground. Once complete, it will provide a direct and fast route between Dahisar West and Bhayander West. The total length of this road project is about 5.135 kilometres, and it includes several types of engineering structures such as elevated roads, a road built on pillars through mangrove areas, an elevated structure over a creek, an elevated path over saline land, connecting roads and interchanges for distributing traffic, and flyovers.

The main elevated stretch of the Dahisar-Bhayander Link Road project, about 3.83 kilometres long and 45 metres wide, is the last portion of the Mumbai Coastal Road (North). Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar visited the site and reviewed the progress of the initial work. Fencing work for the gabion wall is currently underway, along with the construction of piles, or deep foundations, for the bridge and the pile caps above them.

So far, 60 foundation piles, 5 pile caps, 4 bridge piers, pier caps, and work up to segment number 9 of the bridge structure have been completed. Modern machinery is deployed at the site, and a temporary entry bridge system is also operational. Work on the launching girder will begin in the second week of October, and Abhijit Bangar personally reviewed the details of this work.

Abhijit Bangar directed officials to speed up the process of land acquisition required for the project and to set priorities for this. He also asked for cooperation from various authorities as well as the Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation. Officials were told to strictly follow the prescribed safety procedure, or SOP, and to put up barricading at the site for safety during the work. He also said the work should be of good quality and completed on schedule, and that further planning and implementation should keep the December 2028 completion target in mind.
