Chandrapur students craft bamboo Ganesh idol to launch Bamboo Week
Students at a bamboo research centre in Chichpalli, Chandrapur, made an eco-friendly Ganesh idol entirely from bamboo to open World Bamboo Week 2026
Ganeshotsav took a different form this year at the Bamboo Research and Training Centre (BRTC) in Chichpalli, Chandrapur. Students at the centre crafted an attractive Ganesh idol entirely out of bamboo, drawing attention from across the district. The initiative was named "BambooToBappa".
The students formally installed the bamboo Ganesh idol, marking the enthusiastic start of "World Bamboo Week 2026" at the centre. The effort was aimed at sending a message about an eco-friendly Ganeshotsav.
The Maharashtra Forest Department's bamboo research and training centre is hosting "World Bamboo Week 2026" from September 14 to 18. On the very first day of the week, students of the Diploma in Bamboo Technology came together to create the bamboo Ganesh idol, which became the centre of attraction for everyone present.
By creating this eco-friendly and artistic Ganesh idol from bamboo, the students presented a unique blend of tradition, environmental conservation and modern bamboo technology. Through the idol, they sought to convey that bamboo's use is not limited to traditional items alone but can also be put to effective use in modern design, artwork, sustainable products and entrepreneurship.
The initiative also gave a fresh shape to the idea of an eco-friendly Ganeshotsav. The "bamboo Bappa" that the students created through creative use of nature-friendly bamboo drew the attention of everyone present. Officials and guests at the event particularly praised the students' creativity and skill.
Those present at the event included BRTC director Umesh Verma, forest range officer Satish Shende, Chichpalli sarpanch Chandan Uchekar and Sachin Dhatrak of New Era Clinic Solution. Also present were BRTC officials, staff and a large number of students.
Guests said during the event that bamboo could be called "green gold" and that bamboo-based eco-friendly products, skill development, employment generation and rural entrepreneurship could give a major boost to sustainable economic development.
"World Bamboo Week 2026" also includes technical sessions, expert guidance, activities for students, competitions and awareness programmes. The week will conclude on September 18 with a special event for "World Bamboo Day". This year's theme for the week is "Bamboo for the Future: From Tradition to Innovation", aimed at promoting research on bamboo, fresh thinking, sustainable livelihoods and a green economy.
