Washington Sundar's T20 spot questioned despite lean form

With the T20 series between India and Afghanistan set to begin, Washington Sundar's selection to the Indian team has sparked debate among fans, who are questioning why the player was picked.
In a career spanning 62 matches, Sundar has scored just 279 runs and taken 51 wickets so far. His bowling speed is also considered fairly weak. His strike rate stands at 127, which is very low by the standards of today's T20 cricket. He bats in the lower order, a position that requires a batter who can hit boundaries and sixes as soon as he comes to the crease.
Sundar has consistently been an important player in India's T20 side, but his recent performances have been even worse. He failed to take a single wicket in his last five T20 International matches. On the UK tour, he played two matches, bowling just two overs and conceding 38 runs. He gave away 19 runs in an over against Ireland, and England also took 19 runs off one of his overs. With the bat too, he managed only 5 runs off 8 balls and just 9 runs off 12 balls.
At the 2026 T20 World Cup, when Axar Patel was dropped from the side for the match against South Africa, Sundar was given a chance. He conceded 17 runs in 2 overs without taking a wicket and was dismissed for 11 runs off 11 balls. In the same tournament, against the Netherlands, Sundar conceded 36 runs in 4 overs without taking a wicket. In all, across his last 5 T20 Internationals, Sundar has bowled 12 overs, conceding 121 runs at an economy rate of more than 10, without taking a single wicket.
A look at Sundar's bowling in his last 10 innings suggests the captain does not fully trust him. In these 10 innings, he has bowled a complete four-over spell only twice. Six times he was given just 1 over to bowl, while once he bowled two overs. Against Australia in Canberra, he bowled just 1.2 overs. Despite this, Sundar remains in the team, leaving fans confused about the reasons behind his selection.
