Volvo launches long-range PHEV versions of XC60, XC90 with up to 200km electric range
Volvo has introduced long-range plug-in hybrid versions of the XC60 and XC90 SUVs for select markets in Europe and the US.
Volvo Cars has introduced new long-range plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) versions of its two large SUVs, the XC60 and XC90, for select markets in Europe and the United States. Both vehicles now get a larger battery and a more powerful electric motor, which has significantly boosted their ability to run on electric power.
According to the company, based on WLTP testing, the XC60 can now travel up to 200km on battery alone. The seven-seat XC90's electric range is stated at up to 160km. Bookings for both models have already started in some markets, and production is expected to begin soon.
The company says the new range is more than 2.5 times that of the older PHEV models. These vehicles have a larger battery fitted in the floor along with a powerful electric motor, which has considerably increased the electric driving range. Once the battery charge runs out, the petrol engine takes over, so drivers do not have to rely solely on charging for long journeys.
The look of the XC60 has also been significantly updated. It gets a new grille, front bumper, bonnet, front fenders and alloy wheels, along with updated Thor's Hammer Matrix LED headlamps. The tailgate, LED taillamps and rear bumper have also been changed. Inside, there is a new dashboard, door panels, wood trim and an option of Cardamom ventilated Nappa leather.
The seven-seat XC90 retains its Scandinavian-design premium cabin. It offers an optional Bowers & Wilkins sound system and an infotainment system with Google Gemini AI. The XC60 gets a new Volvo Car UX with an 11.2-inch central screen.
Both SUVs get safety features such as a 360-degree 3D camera, lane change assist, automatic emergency braking and emergency steering support. With Google Gemini, drivers can use natural language voice commands for navigation, finding locations and messaging. Software updates will be delivered over the air. The company has clarified that actual electric range can vary depending on temperature, weather, speed, road conditions and driving style.
