Global sportswear company Adidas has decided to lay off employees in its technology division in India. Around 50 percent of employees at its India Tech Hub in Gurugram are reported to be affected by the cuts. However, the company has not yet officially disclosed the exact number of employees affected. Several technology-related roles, including software engineers, data scientists and data engineers, are said to be impacted.

Adidas has acknowledged that it has decided to reduce some positions in its technology organisation in India. According to the company, the decision is driven by the need to adapt its operating model to changing business requirements. The company also cited simplifying certain internal processes, strengthening key technical capabilities, and preparing for future business needs as reasons behind the change.

Around 700 employees work at Adidas's India Tech Hub in Gurugram. Of these, 350 or more employees are feared to be affected by the layoffs, meaning about 45 to 50 percent of the total staff could be impacted. However, Adidas has not yet finalised this figure.

Employees were informed of the decision at a town hall meeting held on September 15. According to reports, some employees were handed exit letters the same day, while another group has been asked to remain with the company until December. During this period, they will have to hand over their work to colleagues at other tech hubs. If they do not find another role within the company in the meantime, December 15 could be their last working day. However, no clear information has emerged yet regarding severance packages or the notice period.

Adidas's Gurugram office houses both its local marketing operations and its global engineering tech hub. As part of its expansion in India, the company had also set up a Global Business Services centre in Chennai in 2024. The layoffs now underway in the technology division point to broader changes taking place in the company's global technology and operational structure.
