Vastu tips: right directions for wood, metal or stone nameplates

The nameplate on a home's main door is that house's identity. Some prefer a wooden nameplate, others one made of metal or stone. According to vastu shastra, a nameplate is not just a means of identification; it is believed that its material and direction affect the energy that enters the home. This is why some vastu rules should be kept in mind while choosing a nameplate.

According to vastu, wood is associated with growth, stability and prosperity, so a wooden nameplate is considered auspicious for a home. Strong varieties of wood such as teak, rosewood, mahogany and mango wood can be used for this. However, it is advised to avoid nameplates made of plywood, MDF or plastic, as these only look like wood. East and south are considered the auspicious directions for a wooden nameplate.

A metal nameplate is associated with wealth and new opportunities. Attractive nameplates can be made from metals such as brass, copper, steel and iron. A brass nameplate in particular is considered auspicious for a home. North and west are considered the ideal directions for a metal nameplate. According to vastu, north is considered the direction of Kubera, so placing a brass nameplate in this direction is considered auspicious for wealth and prosperity.

According to vastu, stone is linked to the earth element and is seen as a symbol of strength and stability. A nameplate made of marble, granite or other natural stone can be placed on the main gate of the house. It is believed that this also helps guard against negative energy. The southwest and northwest directions are considered auspicious for a stone nameplate. The southwest direction is associated with stability, and it is believed that placing a nameplate there can increase the respect and influence of the head of the household.

A few more vastu rules are also advised to be kept in mind. Nameplates made of materials that imitate or resemble wood, such as plyboard, plastic or MDF, should be avoided. Rather than placing the nameplate exactly in the middle of the door, placing it to the right of the main door is considered more auspicious. The nameplate should also always be kept clean, and a soft yellow focus light should be fitted on it so that it is never left in the dark.
