Putin ally funded Trump Jr's wedding celebrations, report says

A startling disclosure has emerged about the wedding of Donald Trump Jr, elder son of US President Donald Trump, and his wife Bettina Anderson. The wedding took place on a private island in the Bahamas in May 2026, and the celebrations that followed over two nights, costing millions of dollars, were reportedly funded by a close associate of Russian President Vladimir Putin. It has come to light that Russian businessman and International Boxing Association (IBA) president Umar Kremlev bore this heavy expense.

Investigative journalism organisation ProPublica has published a detailed report on the matter. According to the report, the three-day event in the Bahamas required two private islands, and Kremlev paid for the rental of one of them, arrangements for guests' stay, lavish parties and fireworks worth millions of rupees, through an entity based in Dubai. Umar Kremlev is considered part of Putin's inner circle and has been sanctioned by Ukraine. This is why the scale of financial involvement by a figure linked to the Kremlin and the Russian embassy in a family function of the president's son has raised serious questions among the opposition and intelligence experts in the United States.

Umar Kremlev heads the IBA and is regarded as an influential and wealthy Russian businessman. He has very close ties with the Russian government and President Putin. His association has also had major financial dealings with Russia's state energy company Gazprom.

According to a spokesperson for Trump Jr, Trump Jr and Umar Kremlev met through a mutual friend during a hunting trip. Their friendship developed over a shared interest in boxing and outdoor sports. However, the Trump family has claimed that Kremlev has no business or political dealings with Trump Jr. The main wedding ceremony in the Bahamas was attended by only 18 family members, but the subsequent parties drew attention from guests present because of Kremlev and a large group of Russian nationals who accompanied him.

After reports of Russian funding intensified debate in the American media, Donald Trump Jr's wife Bettina Anderson posted a lengthy statement on social media addressing the controversy. Bettina confirmed the report of the financial involvement but firmly rejected any suggestion of political or improper intent behind it.

In her post, Bettina wrote, "Don and I got married on May 22 in a very private setting, with only our family present. The beautiful two-night celebration following our wedding was generously hosted by our dear friend Umar Kremlev. It was an incredibly generous and precious wedding gift from a friend, for which we will always be grateful." She further wrote, "It is unfortunate that a good and personal moment of happiness is being viewed through a political or suspicious lens based on someone's background or where they come from. Friendship does not need a political purpose, and generosity does not always hide an agenda. Sometimes a wedding gift is just a simple gift. There is no conspiracy here, and no secret."

While the Trump family has described it as purely a personal friendship and gift, American lawmakers and security experts have expressed deep concern. Robert Garcia, senior Democratic member of the US House Oversight Committee, raised the question on social media, "Russian businessman Umar Kremlev spent millions of dollars on the US president's son. What did he get in return? The American people deserve an answer to this question."

With the Russia-Ukraine war ongoing and continuing debate in the US over Russian interference, the fact that the president's son, seen as close to Trump and his political heir, has accepted such an expensive gift from a Russian oligarch is likely to fuel further controversy in American politics in the coming days.
