Nagpur BSc graduate loses Rs 5 lakh in stocks, robs bank to repay debt

An educated young man who suffered a loss of about Rs 5 lakh after investing in the stock market dared to rob a bank to repay his debt. The accused threw chilli powder in the eyes of bank employees and robbed them of Rs 4.53 lakh in cash, but police caught him within minutes of the incident.

The case is from the State Bank of India branch at Bhande Plot Chowk, under the jurisdiction of Sakkardara police station. The incident took place on Thursday evening. The arrested accused has been identified as Suraj Borkar (28), a resident of Tatoli, Bhivapur. Suraj has studied up to BSc but is currently unemployed.

Initial police investigation revealed that Suraj had taken a loan of about Rs 5 lakh to invest in the stock market. As his investment suffered heavy losses, his debt burden kept growing, and it was to repay this debt that he planned the bank robbery.

Around 6:30 pm on Thursday, Suraj was watching the cash deposit machine outside the bank. As soon as a bank employee was about to withdraw cash from the machine and deposit it in the bank, Suraj threw chilli powder in his eyes from behind. The employee tried to resist, but Suraj fled with Rs 4.53 lakh. The entire incident was captured on the bank's CCTV camera.

As soon as they received news of the robbery, Sakkardara police set up checkpoints in the area and launched a search operation. Police were already patrolling the area in view of the Marbat festival. During this, police personnel Tappulal Chute, Rajendra Mohod, Shailesh Belekar and Sharadsingh Tembhare spotted the suspicious Suraj running near NIT garden.

Police chased and caught him a short distance away. The entire robbed cash has also been recovered from him. Sakkardara police are further investigating the case, including whether anyone else was involved in planning the robbery.
