BMC to demolish illegal slum structures over 14 feet tall across Mumbai

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is preparing large-scale action against illegal construction in Mumbai's slums. The administration has announced a special drive from October 1 to December 31, 2026, targeting unauthorised structures. The action will be carried out on the directions of Commissioner Ashwini Bhide and led by Additional Commissioner (Efficiency) Devendra Singh. The aim is to curb illegal construction built without permission and structures considered dangerous.

The BMC's drive will target slum structures that are 14 feet or more in height. The administration has said that people who have built illegal structures in slum areas should remove them immediately on their own, failing which strict action will be taken against them.

According to the figures, there are a total of 2,23,150 slum structures across the Brihanmumbai region, covering Mumbai city and its suburbs. Of these, 39,111 structures have been found to be 14 feet or more in height. Of these, 3,348 structures are in the city division, 4,536 in the western suburbs, and the highest number, 31,227, are in the eastern suburbs. The BMC has previously carried out demolition action on 4,584 structures.

So far, notices have been issued for 611 structures. The administration has told residents of the remaining structures to remove their illegal construction themselves immediately, or face strict action. This warning has been repeated several times by the municipal administration.

Action against illegal construction is also continuing at the level of BMC's individual wards. Between August 24 and September 15, 2026, demolition action was completed on a total of 128 illegal structures, while action is planned against 140 more illegal structures. The administration has appealed to citizens to avoid illegal construction and to remove any such existing construction themselves immediately, failing which strict action by the BMC is certain.
