Maruti Suzuki completes 10 lakh vehicle dispatches via in-plant rail sidings

Maruti Suzuki has crossed another major milestone in expanding its use of railways for vehicle transport. The company has dispatched more than 10 lakh vehicles combined through in-plant railway sidings built at its Hansalpur plant in Gujarat and Manesar plant in Haryana. Of these, about 7.9 lakh vehicles were dispatched directly from the Hansalpur plant and about 2.1 lakh from Manesar.

The Hansalpur railway siding began operations in March 2023, while the Manesar facility became operational in June 2025. The 10 lakh vehicle figure from these two sites was achieved in 3 years and 5 months. Notably, in the current financial year 2026-27, more than 3 lakh vehicles have already been dispatched from these two sidings up to August 31. These two facilities account for about 70 per cent of the company's total railway dispatch.

Over the last decade, railways have become significantly more important to Maruti Suzuki's logistics. In financial year 2014-15, only 5 per cent of the company's total vehicle transport was via railways. This share rose to 26.5 per cent in financial year 2025-26. The company now aims to dispatch 35 per cent of its vehicles via railways by financial year 2030-31.

Greater use of railways reduces the need to truck vehicles ready at the factory to external loading terminals. This helps cut truck movement, fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Since financial year 2014-15, Maruti Suzuki has dispatched more than 33 lakh vehicles in total via railways, of which 10 lakh vehicles were sent directly from in-plant sidings.

The railway siding has been built under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan. Maruti Suzuki now also plans to build a separate in-plant railway siding for its Kharkhoda plant in Haryana. This is expected to further increase the share of railways in the company's vehicle dispatch going forward.
