Unidentified vehicle kills elderly man in Virar, driver flees
A 65-year-old man died after an unidentified vehicle hit him on a bridge in Virar East and the driver fled without helping him.
An unidentified vehicle struck a 65-year-old man on the Gadgapada bridge in Virar East, killing him after the driver fled the scene without helping him. The accident took place on Thursday, September 17, between 4 pm and 5 pm. The Virar police have registered a case against the unidentified driver.
The deceased has been identified as Mahadev Ratna Savar, 65, a resident of Dongaripada, Shirgaon, Virar East. His nephew, Damodar Hira Gavit, 24, has filed a complaint at Virar police station. According to the complaint, Damodar Gavit was at work on Thursday when a friend called to tell him that Mahadev Savar had met with an accident. He rushed to the spot on hearing this.
Mahadev Savar was walking on the bridge located about 100 metres from Gadgapada junction in the Chandansar area of Virar East when an unidentified vehicle hit him hard, leaving him seriously injured.
According to the complaint, the driver did not provide any medical help to the injured Savar after the collision. He left the injured man there and drove off without informing the police. Savar later died from his injuries in the accident.
On being informed, senior police inspector L. M. Ture and woman assistant sub-inspector Jadhav of Virar police station reached the spot and inspected the scene. Police recorded e-evidence at the site. Virar police have registered a case against the unidentified driver under sections 106(1), 281, 125(A) and 125(B) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, and sections 184 and 187 of the Motor Vehicles Act. The case has been registered as crime register number 556/2026. Police are investigating to trace the vehicle and the driver involved in the accident. Assistant sub-inspector Garale is investigating the case further.
