Nagpur university raises fees by 7 percent, new students to feel the pinch

Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University in Nagpur has raised its fees by 7 percent this year, as it does every year, adding to the financial burden on the parents of students studying at the university. The decision was taken by the university's management council. As in the past, the views of principals, institution managements and student organisations were sought before the decision. At a meeting on Thursday, representatives of principals and managements supported the fee hike. The committee also indicated that fees could rise by up to 20 percent this session.

The university administration has issued an official notification on the new fee structure, after which studying will become costlier for students. Fees for arts, science, commerce and other faculties will rise by 7 percent. The increase will apply from this year, 2026-27. This means undergraduate and postgraduate courses at Nagpur University will become more expensive, directly affecting students.

Students taking admission in the first semester this year will feel the biggest impact of the fee hike, since the increased fee will apply to them for the next three years. Under the process, students admitted this time will have to pay the increased fee for all three years of the course, directly affecting both students and their parents.

Every college's admission process also carries a separate charge for computer-related courses. Students for whom computers are not a "core subject" are also being charged an extra 1,200 rupees. This amount is being collected from students in the name of computer training, and it has raised questions among students and teachers. The fee hike is expected to create tension between students and student unions.

Besides adding to the financial burden, the computer fee will also become compulsory for students who do not have computers as a subject, adding to their expenses. Students from rural areas and backward classes in particular may bear the brunt of the fee hike. Student organisations are expected to mount a strong protest or agitation against the university administration over the decision.
