Ganpati Bappa holds a special place in Mumbai's Girgaon and Khetwadi areas. The Khetwadi Ganraj, based in this locality, is counted among Mumbai's most famous, oldest and grandest Ganesh mandals. The idol installed on Girgaon's 12th lane, and the craftsmanship behind it, is known not just in Mumbai or Maharashtra but around the world.
Few people know the mandal's real history. The "12th Khetwadi Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal" officially began this tradition in 1952, making the festival more than seven decades old. However, some records suggest the mandal's current form has been in place since 1959, indicating that its form in the early years may have been different before it later changed. This is considered not just a festival but a symbol of the deep, unwavering devotion and collective unity of local residents.
The Khetwadi Ganraj also holds the record for building the tallest idol in history. The mandal gained real recognition and worldwide fame in the year 2000, when it built a 40-foot-tall idol, setting the record for the tallest Ganesh idol in Indian history. This one feat set the Khetwadi Ganraj apart from other mandals and gave it a distinct identity.
It is not just a Ganesh mandal but an example of deep devotion, culture and collective dedication. Every year, Bappa is presented in a new and different form so that devotees see something new each time. Sometimes Bappa is shown seated on Sheshnag, sometimes the pandal and idol are decorated based on an Indian historical theme such as the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, and sometimes a global and historical theme such as Roman culture is chosen.
The grand idol of Bappa is beautifully adorned with heavy real gold ornaments and precious diamonds, which further enhances its grandeur. Ganpati idols are installed at various spots in Khetwadi, from the first lane to the 14th lane, and the entire area is considered Bappa's stronghold. Even so, it would not be wrong to say that among all of these, the "Khetwadi Ganraj" on the 12th lane draws the most attention and attracts the largest crowds of devotees.
