JSW Group and Skoda Auto Volkswagen are preparing to set up a joint venture together in India. The two companies have signed a key agreement under which JSW Group will hold a 51 percent stake and Skoda Auto Volkswagen 49 percent. The companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Tuesday, and the final deal is expected to be completed by December.
The partnership aims to boost vehicle production in India and build up more local-level operations. Demand for cars in India continues to grow, and the country is becoming a major production hub for carmakers worldwide. The joint venture could give momentum to production, the supply chain and localisation going forward.
Both companies bring their own strengths. JSW Group has long experience handling large industrial projects, production and expanding business in India. Skoda Auto Volkswagen brings vehicle technology, engineering, design and wide experience of automobile markets around the world. Combining these strengths could create an opportunity to build new vehicle projects for Indian customers.
Several questions remain unanswered. There is no firm information yet on how much will be invested in the proposed joint venture, where production facilities will be set up, or which models will eventually be made. It is believed there could be a greater focus going forward on electric vehicles, the use of local parts and modern production technology.
The deal is not being viewed simply as a business agreement between the two companies. Given rising demand for vehicles, the localisation of production and the shift towards new-energy vehicles, the JSW Group and Skoda Auto Volkswagen joint venture could turn out to be one of the major developments ahead for India's automobile sector.
The venture is expected to create new employment opportunities, bring business to local suppliers and boost demand in the auto components sector. Higher production could also provide a stronger base for vehicle exports from India. However, details of investment, production targets and market strategy will only become fully clear once the final deal is signed. The auto industry will therefore be watching for announcements related to this joint venture in the coming months, and customers can expect more options and more competitive vehicles as a result of the deal going forward.
