HDFC Bank, the country's largest private sector bank, has appointed Jimmy Tata as its executive director. He has been chosen as a whole-time director for a term of three years. The appointment will take effect only after approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The decision has drawn considerable attention in the banking sector.
Jimmy Tata currently serves as the bank's chief credit officer. He holds a Master of Financial Management degree from the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management and is a Chartered Financial Analyst from the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India. He has more than 35 years of experience in the banking and financial services sector.
Tata began his career in 1987 as a consultant with Strategic Consultants Private Limited. Two years later he joined Apple Industries Limited, where he later headed the wholesale leasing and hire purchase department. In 1994, he joined HDFC Bank's corporate banking department as a relationship manager and later became head of the same department. In June 2013, Tata took charge as HDFC Bank's chief risk officer.
Besides his role at the bank, Tata is also on the board of directors of International Asset Reconstruction Company Private Limited (IARC) and HDB Financial Services Limited. He is also a trustee of the HDB Employees Welfare Trust.
At the same meeting, the board of directors also approved the reappointment of V. Srinivasa Rangan as executive director and whole-time director. This appointment will be for one year, from November 23, 2026 to November 22, 2027, and is subject to the necessary approvals.
HDFC Bank has also approved the creation of another whole-time director post. This will take the number of whole-time directors on the bank's board, apart from the managing director and chief executive officer, to four. The bank said the aim of the new post is to ensure better coordination and oversight of its subsidiaries, as well as to strengthen succession planning.
The bank stated in its filing that the appointment to this new post will be made in consultation with the new MD and CEO after they take charge. The bank also said that the required shareholder approval will be obtained later.
The bank said it has sent the names of two candidates for the posts of managing director and CEO to the RBI. According to the exchange filing, the candidates' names were submitted in order of priority, along with details of the proposed salary for a three-year term, subject to RBI approval. The bank has not disclosed the identities of the two candidates.
