Guwahati's 45-ft eco-friendly Ganesh idol dedicated to late singer Zubeen Garg

Preparations for Ganesh Chaturthi are underway across the country, and Assam's capital Guwahati is no exception. In the city's Fatasil Ambari area, an eco-friendly Ganesh idol nearly 45 feet tall has been made this year. The idol has been dedicated to the memory of late singer Zubeen Garg.
This year's Ganesh festival has been jointly organised by the Dr B.R. Ambedkar Youth Club and the Telugu Association of the Fatasil Ambari area. Both organisations have been celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi for the past 40 years. They had earlier installed 41-foot and 35-foot idols, but this time a 45-foot idol has been made, dedicated to Zubeen Garg.
This year's idol has been made entirely in an eco-friendly manner. No plastic or synthetic colours were used in making it. Organisers say the idol is believed to be the tallest Ganesh idol in northeast India.
Youth club secretary C.H. Govinda said that idols of 41 feet and 35 feet had been made earlier, but this time's 45-foot idol is dedicated to Assam's famous artist and late singer Zubeen Garg.
The idol is about 45 feet tall, has been made in an eco-friendly manner, avoiding plastic and synthetic colours, and is dedicated to the memory of late singer Zubeen Garg. The organisers have been celebrating the Ganesh festival for the past 40 years.
Telugu Association member D.K. Kamaraju said this year's Ganesh festival will run for seven days, with various programmes scheduled between September 14 and 20. Local MLAs, MPs and other ministers have also been invited to the celebrations.
Zubeen Garg was a well-known Assamese singer, composer, lyricist and actor. He also sang several popular songs for Hindi films. Songs such as "Ya Ali", "Dil Tu Hi Bata", "Ek Din Teri Raahon Mein" and "Dilruba" earned him recognition across the country.
Zubeen Garg died in suspicious circumstances in Singapore on September 19, 2025. An investigation into his death is underway, and some people have been arrested in connection with the case so far.
The 45-foot Ganesh idol dedicated to Zubeen Garg has become a special tribute for his fans and the people of Assam.
