Preparations to welcome Ganpati Bappa are underway everywhere, with an atmosphere of joy and enthusiasm in homes for the eleven days of the festival. Many kinds of modak are made for the offering during these days, including steamed modak, fried modak and dry fruit modak. But if you have little time and limited ingredients, a royal besan mawa modak is a good option for the offering. The best part is that these modak keep well for two to three weeks.
During the festival everyone is in a hurry, and it is often hard to decide what to make for the offering. With just a bowl of besan and some dry fruits, you can make modak quickly. Modak are a favourite with children and adults alike. Here is an easy recipe for royal besan mawa modak to make for Bappa.
For this you need besan, mawa, powdered sugar, ghee, milk, saffron, cardamom powder, desiccated coconut and dry fruits.
To make it, first heat ghee in a pan and add a bowl of besan, roasting it on low flame until it turns light red. The besan should be roasted until the ghee begins to separate from it. Then mix in sugar, saffron-infused milk and cardamom powder into the roasted besan, stirring continuously with a spoon.
Separately, in a bowl, mix finely chopped dry fruits, mawa, cardamom powder, desiccated coconut and a little powdered sugar. Grease a modak mould with ghee. Spread the besan mixture evenly in the mould, fill it with the dry fruit mixture, and seal the modak well.
Decorate the finished modak with gold or silver leaf. The royal besan mawa modak for Bappa are now ready.
