If you invest or trade in the stock market, take note: markets will stay shut for three straight days next week, so settle any buying or selling plans in advance. Mumbai's BSE and the National Stock Exchange, NSE, will both be closed on September 14, 2026, for Ganesh Chaturthi, with no trading that day.
September 12 is a Saturday and September 13 a Sunday, the usual weekend closure. Ganesh Chaturthi falls on the Monday after, so the market will be shut that day too, making it a three-day closure in all. Anyone looking to buy or sell shares will have to wait until Tuesday.
This is not limited to the stock market. It also applies to those trading in gold, silver or commodities. On the MCX, where gold and silver are traded, Monday's morning session will be closed too. That session normally runs from 9 am to 5 pm, but will not operate that day because of Ganesh Chaturthi, meaning the commodity market will also be shut.
Once the holiday ends, the market will resume its normal schedule from Tuesday. There will be a pre-open session from 9 am to 9:15 am, followed by regular trading from 9:15 am to 3:30 pm. India's stock market operates Monday to Friday and remains closed on weekends.
Several more holidays are coming up between September and December. The NSE has already released its full 2026 calendar. According to it, markets will be closed on September 14, 2026, for Ganesh Chaturthi, October 2, 2026, for Gandhi Jayanti, October 20, 2026, for Dussehra, November 10, 2026, for Diwali and Bali Pratipada, November 24, 2026, for Guru Nanak Jayanti, and December 25, 2026, for Christmas. Traders should plan their investments and deals keeping these dates in mind.
