The Employees Provident Fund Organisation, or EPFO, works to secure employees' lives after retirement while also supporting them through sudden financial trouble. Often a medical emergency, a child's higher education, a wedding or buying a house calls for a large sum at short notice. In such cases, employees can make a partial withdrawal from their PF account as an advance.

EPFO has now clarified that PF account holders can withdraw money from their fund in five specific situations. However, EPFO has also fixed limits on how many times money can be withdrawn for each purpose.

The first reason is medical emergency and illness. If an employee needs money for the treatment of themselves or a family member, such as a spouse, child or parent, an advance can be withdrawn from the PF account. Notably, there is no maximum limit on withdrawals for medical treatment.

The second reason is children's education. PF money can also be used to cover the cost of higher education after Class 10. An advance for education can be withdrawn a maximum of 10 times during the entire period of EPFO membership.

The third reason is wedding expenses. Money can be withdrawn from the PF account for one's own wedding or that of a child or sibling. This facility can be used a maximum of 5 times over the entire period of employment.

The fourth reason is buying or building a house. EPFO allows an advance for house-related expenses as well. This includes buying a new house or plot, construction of a house, repayment of a home loan, or house repairs. Withdrawals for these house-related purposes are capped at a maximum of 5 times during employment.

The fifth reason is special circumstances, such as natural disasters or a company shutting down, which are notified by the Central Board of Trustees. Withdrawals under this head are capped at a maximum of 2 times in a financial year.

Under EPFO's rules, if an employee has completed 12 months, or one year, as an EPFO member, they can withdraw up to a maximum of 75 percent of their total EPF balance as an advance. This amount can be withdrawn for any of the valid reasons listed above.

EPFO is continuously taking new steps to make its services easily accessible to its members. As part of this, EPFO has launched an official channel on the WhatsApp messaging platform. EPFO has posted on the social media platform X appealing to members to join this WhatsApp channel.

Through this WhatsApp channel, employees will be able to easily get all new updates and important information related to PF from home. EPFO has also shared a QR code in its post, which members can scan to join the channel directly.
