Africa's richest industrialist Aliko Dangote has launched the IPO of his company, Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals. It is being seen as the biggest IPO share sale in Africa's history. The company has put up 4.1 billion shares for sale in the IPO, with each share priced at 525 naira. The offering aims to raise about 1.6 billion dollars.

The Dangote Refinery IPO opened on September 14 and investors can apply for shares until October 13. The company's shares will be listed on the Nigerian stock exchange. Digital platforms and fintech services have been made available so that small investors can also participate easily.

About 3.3 percent of the company is being sold in this IPO. However, the Dangote Group will retain a large stake in the company, meaning control of the company will remain with the Dangote Group.

The Dangote Refinery, built near Lagos, is one of Africa's largest oil refining projects. The project cost about 20 billion dollars to build. Production at the refinery began in 2024, and its current capacity is about 700,000 barrels a day.

The refinery has been a major benefit to Nigeria in terms of refined petroleum products. Along with meeting the country's domestic fuel needs, the company is also working to build capacity to export fuel to other African countries.

A large share of the funds raised from the IPO is planned to be spent on expanding the refinery. The company aims to increase production capacity from 700,000 barrels to 1.4 million barrels per day in the coming years. This could make the Dangote Refinery one of the largest refineries in the world.

The share sale gives ordinary investors a chance to take a stake in one of Africa's biggest industrial projects. However, the company's large valuation, the cost of future expansion and volatility in the oil market mean the investment also carries risk. The IPO is being seen as a historic milestone for Africa's stock markets.
