The craze for electric cars in India is growing rapidly, and this was clear in the sales figures for the first half of 2026. Between January and June 2026, a total of 1,48,023 pure electric cars were sold in the country. During the same period, 57,855 units of hybrid cars reached customers. This means electric car sales were more than double those of hybrids.
In H1 2025, 82,535 electric cars had been sold. This means sales in H1 2026 rose by around 79 percent. The growing number of electric models in the market, the expansion of the charging network, and the availability of options across different price segments are seen as the major reasons behind this growth.
JSW MG Motor India, Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors played a big role in this rise. The MG Windsor was the best selling electric car with 19,080 units. The Mahindra XEV 9S came second with 18,074 units. Sales of the Tata Nexon.ev and Punch.ev stood at 16,567 and 15,683 units respectively.
The hybrid car market remains small for now, but Toyota Kirloskar Motor and Maruti Suzuki India dominate it. The Toyota Innova Hycross topped this list with 27,812 units, while 18,577 units of the Urban Cruiser Hyryder were sold. The Maruti Grand Vitara, Victoris and Invicto also featured in this list.
Hybrid car options are currently limited, but this could change in the coming period. After the Kia Sorento Hybrid, the company is preparing to launch a more affordable Seltos Hybrid next year. Renault may launch the Duster Hybrid in India around Diwali. Besides this, the Hyundai Creta Hybrid is also expected to enter the market in 2027.
So for now electric cars have taken the lead, but the competition could get more interesting once names like the Seltos, Duster and Creta join the hybrid segment.
