Low pressure over Bay of Bengal to bring fresh rain to Maharashtra, yellow alert in 28 districts
The weather department has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms and heavy rain across 28 Maharashtra districts as a low pressure area builds over the Bay of Bengal

Rain that had eased in Maharashtra over the past few days is set to pick up again. A low pressure area has formed over the Bay of Bengal and is expected to affect the state over the next two days, with strong winds, thunder and lightning also forecast.
The weather department issued a yellow alert for the state today, September 12, citing the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by rain.
The monsoon axis has now shifted southward. The line runs from Sriganganagar and Churu in Rajasthan through Shivpuri, Damoh and Bilaspur, and then through the same low pressure centre to the east-central Bay of Bengal. A trough also extends from north Rajasthan to the same low pressure centre. Cyclonic winds are blowing up to a height of about 5.8 km over south Konkan and the adjoining Arabian Sea, and a trough persists from south Karnataka to the Gulf of Mannar.
On temperature, in the 24 hours to Friday, September 11 morning, Chandrapur was the hottest at 36.2 degrees Celsius, while Mahabaleshwar was the coldest at just 16.9 degrees Celsius. On rainfall, Talasari in Palghar district recorded the highest at 30 mm in the 24 hours to 8:30 am. Elsewhere, rainfall has remained light and people continue to face heat and humidity.
In Nagpur, the weather is expected to remain hot and humid on Saturday. The city's temperature was recorded at around 33 degrees Celsius, with a maximum of about 33 degrees and a minimum of around 26 degrees Celsius. Sunrise is expected at 5:39 am and sunset at 6:04 pm. Humidity in Nagpur stands at 88 percent, with atmospheric pressure at around 1008. The city's AQI is 52, in the moderate category, with PM2.5 at 25 and PM10 at 28.
According to the weather department, districts likely to see heavy rain with thunderstorms include Palghar, Jalgaon, Nashik, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Hingoli, Nanded, Washim, Amravati, Yavatmal and Wardha. A yellow alert has been issued for all of these.
In addition, Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Nandurbar, Dhule, Ahilyanagar, Pune, Solapur, Beed, Parbhani, Dharashiv, Latur, Nagpur, Bhandara, Gondia, Chandrapur and Gadchiroli may see thunderstorms with rain. Residents in these areas have been advised to be careful in open spaces.
The low pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal near the coast of south Odisha and Andhra Pradesh is expected to strengthen the weather system further and increase rainfall. This rain could bring some relief from the heat and humidity in several parts of the state.
