Bank strike today, followed by weekend holidays, may delay branch work

If you need to get an important task done at a bank, check the schedule first. Bank employees across the country have called a nationwide strike on Friday, September 11, which is likely to affect in-person work at branches. Adding to this, regular weekend holidays on Saturday and Sunday follow right after the strike, which could push back several customer tasks. Since Ganesh Chaturthi festivities also fall in these days, some banks in the state are expected to remain closed.

Several demands of bank employees' unions have reportedly been pending for a long time. The biggest demand is the implementation of a five-day working week at banks. Although this issue has been discussed before, no decision was reached, leading the unions to call a one-day nationwide strike. The unions are demanding that if a five-day week is implemented, banks should get holidays on both Saturday and Sunday. Currently, banks are closed only on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month.

Since regular holidays follow right after the September 11 strike, branch work could remain disrupted for several consecutive days. On Friday, September 11, branch work is likely to be affected due to the nationwide strike. Saturday, September 12, is the second Saturday of the month, so banks will have their regular holiday that day. On Sunday, September 13, branches will remain closed due to the weekly holiday. On Monday, September 14, banks may be closed in some states due to local festivals, but this holiday should not be assumed to apply across the entire country. Customers are advised to check the official bank holiday calendar for their state.

The strike is likely to hit hardest those who need to visit a branch in person for tasks such as depositing or withdrawing cash, depositing cheques and their processing, submitting account documents, KYC and other branch-level services. The strike and the holidays that follow could also delay processes such as cheque clearance.

Even though in-person branch services will be affected, digital services such as UPI, mobile banking and internet banking are expected to function normally. Customers can use digital banking to transfer money, pay bills or carry out online transactions. ATM services are also expected to continue, but the consecutive holidays could put pressure on cash availability at some locations. Customers who need large amounts of cash would do well to plan in advance accordingly.
