AI drives faster tech layoffs, Oracle prepares another big round of cuts
Oracle, Amazon, Dell and Meta have all cut jobs this year as AI reduces the need for staff, with over 128,000 tech workers laid off in 2026 so far.
There is bad news from the tech sector once again. Major company Oracle has started laying off employees once more. The company had shown thousands of people the door before, and the same situation is building up again. But it is not just Oracle - job losses are happening across the world right now. The biggest reason for this is AI, or artificial intelligence.
There is a portal called layoffs.fyi that tracks how many people have been laid off around the world and where. According to this portal, 303 tech companies have laid off employees so far this year. In total, 128,873 people have lost their jobs. This is a very large number. It includes major companies such as Oracle, Amazon, Uber and PayPal.
Oracle is the company being discussed the most right now. The company had already laid off 21,000 people earlier this year, and a new list is now being prepared. The company has not officially said how many more people will be laid off, but according to internal sources, cuts on a large scale are coming.
Amazon, Dell and Meta are not far behind either. Amazon laid off 16,000 people earlier this year, in January. Amazon too is now using AI everywhere, reducing the need for manpower. In addition, Dell sent 11,000 people home in March, and AI played a big role in this as well. Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has also laid off employees several times this year - not just once or twice, but in multiple rounds of cuts.
Nearly all major companies in the world are now investing in AI. Because of AI, a lot of work happens automatically, without the need for people. Whether it is coding, customer support or checking data, AI is now doing all this work. Companies' argument is straightforward - if the machine is doing the work, what is the need to keep so many employees. This is why companies are laying off people to cut costs.
It was earlier believed that new jobs would also be created after AI arrived, but for now the opposite seems to be happening. Old jobs are being lost, and new jobs will require a different kind of skill. This is why everyone working in the tech sector will now have to learn AI, or it will become difficult to keep their job.
