Scooter sales hit record high in August, Honda reclaims number one spot

India's scooter market posted a strong performance even before the start of the festive season. In August 2026, the country's 10 scooter manufacturers together dispatched 855,715 scooters to dealers, the highest monthly figure on record. In August 2025, the number stood at 691,430 units, marking a 31 percent increase this time.

After losing the top position to TVS Motor in July, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India reclaimed the number one spot in August. The company sent a total of 285,527 scooters to dealers, including 283,485 petrol models and 2,042 electric scooters. Honda's market share stood at 33 percent. TVS Motor was in second place with a 30 percent share.

TVS Motor dispatched 256,442 scooters in August, of which 57,523 units were the iQube and Orbiter electric scooters. Suzuki Motorcycle India was third with 101,267 units. It was followed by Hero MotoCorp with 72,150, Bajaj Auto with 53,748 and Yamaha Motor India with 34,279 scooters dispatched.

Electric scooters played a major role in August's record performance. This month, 188,714 e-scooters were sent to dealers, 131 percent more than August 2025. The share of electric models in total scooter sales has now risen to 22 percent. Between January and August 2026, e-scooter dispatches reached 10.8 lakh units, indicating that demand has stayed strong through the year.

Total scooter dispatches between January and August 2026 have reached 6,072,166 units, a 31 percent increase over the first eight months of the year. Growing acceptance of electric scooters, increased stock pushed to dealers by companies ahead of the festive season, and the cost of running petrol vehicles are among the reasons the market's momentum is expected to continue.
