The episode unfolded at Shannon Airport in Ireland. Before boarding Air Force One, President Trump spoke to reporters. Asked directly whether he would back Vice President J.D. Vance for the 2028 presidential race, Trump said, "It's too early. He's terrific... We have a very deep bench... They're all very good..."
Reporters also asked Trump who could be Vance's strongest rival within the party. His remarks suggested that while he is pleased with Vance's work, he has kept his options open regarding other contenders for the 2028 race.
A media report from August 2026 shed light on internal discussions within the Trump administration. According to it, at a private meeting in the White House's Oval Office, Trump told those present, "Ultimately, we'll have to stand with JD (Vance)." Some of Trump's close advisers say he privately believes Vance will eventually take charge of his political movement, "MAGA" (Make America Great Again).
