International Chocolate Day is celebrated across the world every year on September 13 with great enthusiasm. For those who love sweets, the day is nothing short of a festival. But there is an interesting story behind why this particular date was chosen.

Milton S. Hershey, founder of the famous American chocolate company The Hershey Company, was born on September 13, 1857. He made chocolate, once an expensive item, accessible to ordinary people and took it to the world. To honour his contribution and success, the National Confectioners Association declared September 13 as International Chocolate Day. It is worth noting that July 7 is observed as World Chocolate Day, while September 13 is International Chocolate Day.

Across cultures worldwide, chocolate is seen not just as a tasty treat but as a symbol of human emotion, warmth and love. A single piece of chocolate has the power to bring a smile to faces young and old. Its sweet, slightly bitter taste brings a distinct sense of joy and comfort.

On this day, people strengthen their relationships by gifting favourite chocolates to friends, colleagues and family. Often, feelings that cannot be expressed in words are conveyed easily through chocolate. Chocolate companies also use the day to attract customers with new flavours, distinctive packaging and attractive offers.

It is often believed that eating sweets leads to weight gain or harms health, but according to science, chocolate, especially dark chocolate, can be quite beneficial for health when eaten in the right amount.

Dark chocolate has a higher cocoa content, which is rich in antioxidants and flavonoids. This improves blood circulation in the body and helps keep blood pressure under control. Eating dark chocolate releases happy hormones such as serotonin and endorphins in the brain, which relieve mental stress, anxiety and fatigue and refresh mood instantly. It is also considered a good source of quick energy through the day.

In our fast-paced, busy lives, we often forget to feel the joy found in small things. International Chocolate Day reminds us to pause, take some time out and enjoy the sweet moments of life.

Easing bitterness in relationships and bringing back sweetness, thanking someone, or treating oneself, all of this can be done under the excuse of International Chocolate Day. So today, be sure to eat your favourite flavour of chocolate and spread sweetness in the lives of others too.
