19-year-old's suicide stirs outrage; accused held within 10 hours

A 19-year-old woman died by suicide in Gondegaon village in Soygaon taluka of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. Police investigation found that she took the extreme step after being unable to bear the mental distress caused by repeated phone calls pressuring her for marriage and threats made after the accused came to her house. Soygaon police acted swiftly, arresting the suspect within just ten hours of the case being registered.
According to information received, Karan Anil Wagh, a young man residing in Nimbhora (Soygaon taluka), had allegedly been continuously calling the 19-year-old woman from Gondegaon for the past several days, pressuring her for marriage. The complaint stated that he did not stop at phone calls alone but also went to her house in person to threaten her. Her family told police that the constant harassment had left her under mental stress and frightened.
Unable to bear the alleged harassment and threats from Karan Wagh, the woman died by suicide at her own house in Gondegaon on Wednesday night. A Soygaon police team reached the spot as soon as they received information about the incident. The incident caused grief in the area. The deceased woman's maternal uncle filed a complaint with Soygaon police station in the matter.
Based on this complaint, police registered a case against Karan Anil Wagh. Treating the matter seriously, police accelerated the investigation and detained and arrested Karan Wagh from Nimbhora on Thursday night, within just ten hours of the case being registered. The entire period between registration of the case and the arrest was only ten hours, showing how swiftly police acted in the matter.
On Friday, police produced Karan Wagh before the court, which remanded him to one day of police custody. Soygaon police are investigating whether the woman was harassed in any other way, the exact reason behind the threats, and whether further details emerge in the case. The allegations in the case will be verified in the further investigation.
