US issues emergency security alert for Middle East as Saudi-Houthi tensions rise
State Department warns citizens across 16-plus Middle East countries after Saudi Arabia intercepts a ballistic missile and Houthi rebels claim strikes on Riyadh and an Aramco facility.
Military tension in the Middle East is escalating dangerously by the day. After renewed clashes between Saudi Arabia and Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels, the Trump administration has begun taking strict measures. Given the seriousness of the situation, the US State Department has issued an emergency security alert for all its citizens living in or passing through the Gulf region. Conditions could deteriorate at any time, and citizens have been clearly advised to postpone travel to the region or reconsider it very seriously.
The US State Department advisory states clearly that the security environment in the region is extremely complicated and unpredictable. Military operations and missile attacks could cause major disruptions such as sudden flight cancellations, airspace closures or a complete shutdown of transport systems. Citizens have therefore been told to seek safe shelter and keep a constant watch on airport operations.
This security alert is not limited to one country but covers the entire Middle East region. The advisory includes Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, the occupied West Bank and Gaza, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Yemen.
Given the military uncertainty across the entire region, every citizen present there or planning to travel there has been asked to remain on high alert. Conflict could erupt at any moment, so American citizens outside the Middle East have been advised to cancel all travel to the region for now.
The alert follows recent dangerous military incidents in Saudi Arabia. On Saturday, Saudi Arabia's air defense system intercepted and destroyed a high-speed ballistic missile fired toward the capital, Riyadh. In addition, the Saudi-led military has said it foiled several drone and missile attacks targeting sensitive areas including Bisha, Taif, Farasan and Yanbu.
Meanwhile, Yemen's Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for these attacks, openly stating that they carried out precision strikes using missiles and unmanned drones on a highly sensitive military base in Riyadh as well as Saudi Arabia's major Aramco oil facility in Yanbu. There is now a fear that the conflict could directly reach the global fuel supply.
The Trump administration has directly blamed Iran for this entire military conflict and violence. The United States says the Iran-backed Houthi militia is deliberately targeting civilian settlements and airports in Saudi Arabia. Attacking airports used by ordinary citizens violates international rules and poses a major threat to international security. The threat of attacks on US diplomatic posts and embassies has also increased, which has kept security agencies on high alert. There are concerns that if this conflict continues to escalate, it will have a severe impact on the global economy and the crude oil market.
