Rishi Panchami being observed today, marks worship of the seven sages

Rishi Panchami is observed on the second day after the installation of Lord Ganesha. The day involves worship of the Saptarishi, the seven sages, and holds special significance in Hindu tradition as an occasion to remember and honour the great sages who guided society.

The day is observed to give thanks for the knowledge and work of the sages in ancient times. Women observe a fast on this day, believed to atone for unknowing errors or menstrual impurity. This year, Rishi Panchami falls on September 15. There is also a tradition of preparing a mixed dish of wild forest greens on this day.

A Sanskrit shloka recited on the occasion invokes the seven sages by name: Kashyapa, Atri, Bharadwaja, Vishwamitra, Gautama, Jamadagni and Vashishtha, seeking their blessings.

Rishi Panchami is widely marked with greetings exchanged among family and friends, with messages invoking the blessings of the Saptarishi for knowledge, prosperity and happiness.
