Pimpri trader threatened for Rs 5 crore extortion, accused held while taking Rs 25 lakh

A businessman in Pimpri's Bhosari MIDC area was threatened for Rs 5 crore, with four booked and one arrested after Rs 25 lakh was taken.

A case has come to light of a businessman being threatened and extorted for Rs 5 crore at the MIDC Bhosari area in Pimpri. The accused threatened the company, saying it would have to pay Rs 5 crore if it wanted to operate in Maharashtra, and also claimed to have obtained the company's documents.

According to police, the accused had threatened to ruin the company and to kill people connected to it. On the strength of this threat, they also accepted Rs 25 lakh from the concerned persons. A case has been registered against four people in this matter, of whom one accused has been taken into police custody.

The complaint was filed by Nelvin Palamattam Varghese (51), a resident of Plot No. 62, Sector No. 26, Pradhikaran, Nigdi, Pune, at the MIDC Bhosari police station. Based on this, a case has been registered against Rahul Premnarayan Mishra (38), who is associated with social work and resides at Chintamani Chawl, Gandhinagar, Pokhran Road No. 2, Thane West, and Altaf Usman Janwekar (53), who is associated with social work and resides in Thane West.

A case has also been registered against Ramesh Bhima Manjrekar (39), a contractor residing in Thane West, and Sunil Rajendra Kanu (35), who works in carwashing, residing in Thane West. Of these, the accused Sunil Kanu has been taken into police custody.

A similar case had come to light a few days ago in the Sadashiv Peth area of Pune city. There, a businessman was threatened and Rs 37 lakh was extorted in exchange for retaining a hotel's catering contract. A case has been registered against seven people in this matter. A case has been filed at Vishrambaug police station against Nagesh Khashaba Nalawade (53), Umakant Ramchandra Walgude (56), Deepak Keshavrao Dhumal (65, all three residents of Kothrud, Pune), Ganesh Ratnakar Bhoj (53), resident of Bhimpura Camp, Dinesh Arun Khodke (49), Rajan Shankar Kamathe (58), resident of Fursungi, and Nitin Haribhau Waghmare (52), resident of Mangalwar Peth.
