Navi Mumbai bride dies two months after husband's assault, husband arrested

An incident in the Ghansoli area of Navi Mumbai has upended two families' lives. Sayali Sagar Kadam, 29 (maiden name Sayali Sharad Lokhande), a newly married woman, died after a two-month fight in hospital. Her husband grew suspicious over a phone call she received and beat her severely, leaving her critically injured. She was treated at three different hospitals before she died at a hospital in Chembur on September 4. Rabale police have arrested her husband, Sagar Kadam, in the case.

Sayali worked at a private office in the Rabale MIDC area. When she suddenly went missing, her family filed a missing person complaint at Rabale MIDC police station. During the investigation, police found that Sayali and Sagar Ramchandra Kadam (originally from Mahabaleshwar, Satara district) were in a relationship. While she was missing, on July 5, Sagar, suspecting her, beat her brutally, kicking and punching her in the stomach. Just two days later, on July 7, the two got married and began living in a housing society in Sector 7, Ghansoli. Since the assault took place within the jurisdiction of Ghansoli police station, Rabale MIDC police transferred the case to Ghansoli police station for further investigation.

The assault caused serious injury to Sayali's pancreas. After she was admitted to hospital, she initially gave police a false statement saying she was injured after falling down a staircase, to protect her husband from legal action and to save their newly begun married life. But as the pain became unbearable and her condition worsened, she told police the truth about the assault by her husband on August 11.

She was treated at three hospitals: D. Y. Patil Hospital in Nerul, Medicover Hospital in Kharghar, and finally Zen Hospital in Chembur. Her family made every possible effort to save her, including a major surgery, but her two-month fight in the intensive care unit ultimately proved insufficient.

After Sayali's death, Rabale police added a murder charge to the case. The accused, Sagar Kadam, has been arrested and remanded to police custody by the court. Assistant Police Inspector Shekhar Tadvi is investigating the case further under the guidance of Senior Police Inspector Balkrishna Sawant.

The accused, Sagar Kadam, is a vocationally trained engineer who was working as a private car driver for companies. Despite his education, a moment of uncontrolled anger led him to destroy everything.
