Nagpur SBI bank robbery: accused sprays chilli powder, held within 30 minutes

A robbery straight out of a film played out at a State Bank of India branch in Nagpur's Sakkardara area. Suraj Bhojraj Borkar, 28, walked into the bank posing as an ordinary customer and went straight to the cash counter.

When he got the chance, he threw red chilli powder into the eyes of the cashier and other staff present. The burning powder left the staff screaming in pain and caused panic across the bank. Taking advantage of the chaos, the accused fled with about 4 lakh rupees in cash.

As soon as news of the robbery reached them, a team from Sakkardara police station swung into action. Led by police inspector Ramesh Khune, the team examined the bank's CCTV footage and set up checkpoints in the area to catch the accused. As a result of the swift police response, Suraj Borkar was arrested within just 30 minutes of the robbery.

Police said the entire stolen amount was recovered from the accused. After the incident, police questioned bank staff and began investigating the case.

The investigation found that Suraj Bhojraj Borkar has a BSc degree and is from a rural area of Nagpur city. He is said to have been unemployed for some time. According to police's initial investigation, financial difficulties and a desire to make quick money pushed him towards the crime.

With this in mind, he allegedly planned to target the bank and entered the SBI branch posing as a customer. But his film-style plan did not hold up for long. After throwing chilli powder and fleeing with about 4 lakh rupees, police immediately examined CCTV footage and set up checkpoints to catch him.

As a result, police caught him within just 30 minutes and recovered the entire stolen amount. Questioning of the accused is currently underway, and police are also investigating other aspects of the case.
