Maha Metro has taken a major decision on Nagpur's public transport. To deal with traffic congestion in the busy Sadar Bazar area, the metro will now run through an underground tunnel. The entire project is estimated to cost around Rs 3,200 crore. The new route will also make it much easier to reach the famous Koradi temple.

A large flyover already exists in the Sadar area and the roads there are quite narrow. There are hundreds of shops on both sides of this area, so if metro pillars were built above ground, the entire Sadar Bazar would have had to be shut for the next four years and traffic would have come to a complete halt. This is why Maha Metro has decided to build a tunnel 25 to 30 metres below the ground.

After Kasturchand Park, the metro will gradually go underground, pass below the Sadar bus stand and police station, and come back to the surface past Indora Chowk. A tunnel boring machine will be used to build the tunnel, so there will be no noise or disruption in the market above.

The metro running on this route will be fully computer-controlled and driverless. The train will not have a driver's cabin; instead it will have a large glass panel at the front, allowing passengers to see the view inside the tunnel. The entire metro will be operated from the main control room at MIHAN. Automatic glass doors will be installed on platforms for passenger safety. During heavy rush, a train can be run every 90 seconds.

A large two-storey underground station named "Sadar Bhumigat" will be built inside the tunnel, with 5 exit gates. The stations proposed on this route include Kasturchand Park, Sadar Bhumigat, Indora Chowk, Jaripatka Bazar, Jaripatka Police Station, Vahantal Chowk, Koradi Naka, Koradi Vasahat, and the final stations, Koradi Temple and Power House.

The Detailed Project Report, or DPR, for this project is expected to be ready by April 2027. Construction will begin in 2028, and by the end of 2031, the people of Nagpur will be able to travel on this underground metro.
